HISTORY
The A.W.S. was founded in March 1911 and is the fourth oldest magicial society in the country. The driving force behind the foundation of the AWS was Laurance William Spitari, who performed as Laurance Glenn. The first president was G H Hayes followed by Spitari who held office until 1922. One of the founder members of the Society was Prof Harry Woodley, who lived in West Wellow, near Romsey, and was still a member at the Society's Diamond Jubilee back in 1971. He became president in 1924 and again in 1970. The late Jeffery Atkins was President for 33 years.
Among those who have been honorary members or Vice presidents are David Devant, Houdini, Horace Goldin, Will Goldston and more recently, David Berglas and Alan Shaxon.
In view of its past history, today's society has a lot to live up to and in that spirit please help us to make this convention one of the best by having a truly magical day.
