Founded in 1911, the Associated Wizards of the South (of which Houdini was at one time an honorary member) is the fourth oldest magical society in Great Britain and the sixth oldest in the world.
The AWS exists to promote the art of magic and meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Southampton area. Various membership categories are available; a number of our members are full time, professional magicians. Many amateur performers belong to the Society as well a large number for whom magic is simply a hobby. Junior membership is also open to children aged between 12 and 16. For more information on membership of the Society, please see "Membership of the Society."
The Society keeps a well stocked library consisting of many books and videos from which any member can borrow, some of our books are over a hundred years old! Our collection of books and videos ranges from beginner level right through to those suitable for experts. Many of our books and tapes are about magic generally, others deal with specific areas such as card magic, stage magic etc. while others relate to the allied arts, such as juggling and puppetry.
During the year the Society is involved in many events including:
At every meeting you'll find a large number of magicians willing to have a chat and share ideas, you'll receive information on what's happening locally in the world of magic and of course, have the opportunity to learn from the lectures, enjoy the competitions or buy new magical effects, depending on the evening's programme.
All members have access to the Members Area of this website and also receive the Society's newsletter, produced more or less every six weeks and which contains an up-to-date programme of events as well as reports on previous meetings and of course, information on up-and-coming events in the local area.
Why not take a look at the programme of events to see what events we've enjoyed recently as well as have a look at what we've got planned for the months ahead?
